How to Clean your Wood Furniture

March 13th, 2015

Wood Cleaning

If you have purchased or recently refinished or restored a piece of wood furniture, you are more than likely doing everything within your power to keep the piece clean. However, all good things are known to come to an end. This means that spills and scratches are inevitable, unless you wrap your furniture in bubble wrap. Fortunately, there are simple ways to take care of light damage caused by every day wear and tear.

  1. Water Stains- Whether you spilled a glass of water or left a sweating glass on your table, a water stain is sure to follow. This is usually a white mark left behind on the wood from where the moisture was absorbed. Simply rubbing at the mark will not remove it, but removal isn’t difficult at all. Place a thick towel that has been cleaned recently over the stain. Then, place your iron on top of the towel for about five to eight seconds, leaving the iron on the low to medium setting. This will lift the moisture from the wood, allowing you to wipe the stain away. Never place the iron directly on the wood; this will only cause further damage.
  2. Hairspray or Perfume- Once the hairspray or perfume has landed on the wood furniture, allow the moisture to dry. Dip a cloth into water and then ammonia before gently rubbing away the sticky residue. If it appears the stain was lifted from the piece, you should consider having the piece restored.
  3. Chips- When you notice lighter wood shining through from a nick or scratch, just reach for some Brazil or walnuts. Once you have opened the nut, rub the inside along the grain of the scratch. The natural oils from the nuts will replenish the wood. Afterwards, buff the damaged area with a clean, soft cloth.

Why Buy Antique Furniture?

March 3rd, 2015

Antique FurnitureWhen you want to refurnish a room in your home, many homeowners believe they must buy all new furniture in a set. While this may seem like an easy process, it can also be a very costly process when it doesn’t need to be. Instead of spending your hard earned money on new, mass produced furniture, homeowner should instead look into purchasing antique furniture to be refinished or restored.

When you purchase antiques, you are buying a high quality piece of furniture that will last you years. When furniture was made during the late 1800s and early 1900s, they were created by hand and with high quality woods. Oak, pine, and cedar were some of the woods commonly used to create tables, desks, and chairs during these times periods, making them sturdy and reliable. After the 1960s, furniture then became mass produced by large corporations who no longer used high quality woods. Instead, they turned to particleboard and plywood to create more pieces quickly at a cheaper price. When you purchase an antique, you are purchasing a piece of furniture that was created by high quality materials.

While antiques may not be found in complete sets, they are easy to incorporate with modern interior design. A piece of antique furniture can add life and personality to a room that a mass produced piece of furniture cannot. If you believe the piece of antique furniture needs a slight facelift, buyers have the option of refinished or restoring the piece to help it find a place in your home. These processes can help renew the look of your piece without destroying the integrity of the furniture.

At Apple Furniture Services, we specialize in the maintenance and restoration of antique furniture along with a number of other furniture and repair services. Find a piece that needs some work? Bring it to Apple Furniture Services where our skilled woodworkers will treat your piece with care and precision.

Guidelines for Antique Furniture: Part Two

February 3rd, 2015

Antique-Furniture

We discussed last week the first five guidelines to keep in mind when searching and buying antique furniture. There are so many guidelines to keep in mind, we decided to break them down into two parts! While it is a lot of information to keep in mind, never get discouraged. Shopping for antique furniture can be frustrating, but a lot of fun at the same time. Here are the rest of our antique furniture purchasing guidelines:

  1. DIY- A whole table covered in scratches will require a higher skilled hand in comparison to a small scuff on the side of a leg. Never be afraid to attempt a fix on your own, just be sure to do your research beforehand.
  2. Odors- While small scratches can be easily removed and can be taken lightly, the same cannot be said about stains and odors. If you are immediately greeted with a strong odor or dark stain, take the time to reconsider making your purchase. You never want to bring a piece of furniture into your home that could cause a potential health hazard.
  3. End Price- Never jump on a piece of furniture based on its low price tag. The piece may be at a low price initially, but you should take the time to consider refinishing costs and other hidden expenses.
  4. Take your Time- Finding a piece of antique furniture can be exciting, but it can also be a commitment. Think about the living space you have to dedicate to the piece of furniture while also considering the amount of time and money you are willing to dedicate to restoration.
  5. Patience- Always remember that patience is a virtue. Never become discouraged on your first shopping trip that comes up empty handed. We are so used to having pieces produced in masses that we forget to take the time to really search for a piece of unique antique furniture.

At Apple Furniture Services, we specialize in the maintenance and restoration of antique furniture along with a number of other furniture and repair services. Find a piece that needs some work? Bring it to Apple Furniture Services where our skilled woodworkers will treat your piece with care and precision.

Guidelines for Antique Furniture: Part One

January 28th, 2015

Antique-Furniture

Shopping for antique furniture has become quite popular over the past few years. With more quaint shops opening along main streets everywhere, antique furniture has become easily accessible for the masses, as long as you know where and how to look. It is important to remember when shopping for antique furniture that while something may appear worn down, that doesn’t mean it is from the 1940s. Here are some guidelines to use when venturing out into the world of antiques.

  1. Search for tags- Be sure to keep an eye out for tags from popular furniture stores like Ikea. Tags will show that the piece you may be interested in was simply neglected rather than being an antique.
  2. Look Ahead- While it may be difficult to see past surface damage, it is important to look forward to the finish product. Most antiques can be restored, refinished, or reupholstered to bring new life into a piece.
  3. Craftsmanship- While some may not necessarily care about the origin of a piece of furniture, it is always important to care about how the piece was made. Look at details such as joints and wood material to determine how well the piece was made.
  4. Take a Seat- An antique chair may appear perfect for your living space, you will ultimately want to purchase it based on how comfortable it is. Always take a moment to test out the piece before you make a big purchase.
  5. Cushions- To reupholster a piece is typically an option, but reusing previous cushions is always your cheapest way to go. Check the foam inside of the cushions to determine if it needs replacing.

Latest Furniture Trends to Use

January 17th, 2015

Furniture-Trends

If you are looking to update your living space, consider some of the latest furniture trends when you make your plans. Instead of duplicating the looks from magazines, pair the latest trends with restored pieces of furniture to create a room that is completely your own. Pairing the two can help to save you money on all new furniture while also transforming your room into a new style.

  • Going Green- Choose furniture that is environmentally friendly to go green with your living space. Restoring old furniture is a great way to be eco-friendly. You can also be environmentally safe by purchasing pieces of furniture that have been created from recycled materials.
  • Small- Some new homeowners and renters are beginning to notice the smaller rooms being created for homes and apartments. Because rooms are being designed smaller, look for smaller pieces of furniture to prevent clutter. You can also look for pieces that are multipurpose as well.
  • Technology- With so many of us using smart devices on a daily basis, it is important to begin using furniture that supports such technology. Look for pieces that will comfortably store and charge your devices.
  • Light- When you look for refinished or re-purposed furniture, look for lighter woods to match the latest furniture trends. Light woods help to make your room look bigger and less cluttered.
  • Vintage- It is easy to create a vintage vibe for a living space by choosing one stand out vintage piece. Look for mirrors and light fixtures to help bring a vintage feel to your space in a new and unique way.

Furniture Refinishing: Woods to Choose

December 10th, 2014

Furniture Refinishing

When you make the decision to go through with furniture refinishing with a specific piece of furniture, you must first consider what the piece is made of. Newer pieces of furniture are created using particleboard or plywood, which means they are not suitable candidates for furniture refinishing. Older pieces of furniture created before the 1960s were typically created using a higher quality of wood, which makes it easier to go through with furniture refinishing. Here are some woods that you may find when considering furniture refinishing.

  1. Walnut- This type of wood can only be stained certain tones of brown while being refinished. Walnut is also one of the limited types of woods that become lighter as they grow older, rather than darker like most other woods.
  2. Pine- If your piece has been created by pine; determine if it has been painted. Because of its color, most pine pieces of furniture were painted immediately, removing them from the list of furniture refinishing candidates. If the piece has not been painted, you can expect dark color after the refinishing process.
  3. Maple- When dealing with maple wood, you must determine which year the piece was created. Maple used in the early 1900s will have a very strong yellow shade while maple used after the 1960s is known to have an orange shade, which will then create a lighter brown color after refinishing.
  4. Oak- After furniture refinishing, oak wood used when creating popular Victorian furniture will take on a golden color.
  5. Cherry- This type of wood is known to be versatile when it comes to staining during furniture refinishing. However, if they wood is older, you can expect a darker color after the process is complete.
  6. Mahogany- After furniture refinishing, mahogany will still keep the red tones it began with.

Furniture Trends for your Space

November 27th, 2014

furniture-trends

Many homeowners are looking to antique furniture to help create a new style and atmosphere for their living space. While antique furniture is a perfect addition for any living space, it can be helpful to learn about the latest furniture trends as well. Pairing a unique piece of antique furniture with one of the latest furniture trends can create a room that is completely unique and your own.

  • Outdoor meets Indoor- One of the newest furniture trends is using pieces that were originally created for the outdoors in your indoor living space. This typically means fun wicker chairs paired with bright and printed cushions.
  • Glamour- It’s easy to create a glamorous room without going overboard with furniture. Find one piece that sticks out to create a glamorous feel in your living space.
  • Customization- Some homeowners are beginning to look for customized furniture for their space. Some may believe that customization will cost a pretty penny, but it won’t break the bank if you find the right dealer.
  • Metallic and Leather- Living spaces are becoming bold and modern with the use of metallic colors and leather finishes. If you plan on implementing this trend, it’s important to not go overboard with the metallic. Too much metallic can overwhelm your room and guests.
  • Dining Room Table- The dining room table is the main focus of your dining room. It is where you gather with friends and family to enjoy a meal and catch up after a long day. Many are now beginning to find bolder tables to create a more modern dining room space.

Why Choose Furniture Restoration

November 18th, 2014

Whether you already own an older piece of furniture or are looking into making an antique purchase, you may become discouraged by the overall appearance of the piece of furniture. Older furniture may begin to look worn and dull compared to newer pieces of furniture you may have purchased for your home, making you reconsider keeping your antique piece. However, before you decide to discard your perfectly solid piece of furniture, homeowners should consider furniture restoration. Furniture restoration can hold several benefits for homeowners and others alike, and can help breathe new life into your older piece of furniture.

Furniture Restoration

Some reasons for considering furniture restoration include:

  1. The restoration process uses a lesser amount of carbon dioxide than creating a new piece of furniture. This means that the environment will benefit from our smaller carbon footprint when restoring a piece of furniture rather than creating a whole new piece.
  2. While the restoration process may seem like an unnecessary expense, it can help save money in the long run for buyers. This is because while newer furniture may seem cheaper in price, that means they are also cheaper in quality. Buyers will end up having to replace newer furniture more often than if they stuck with older furniture that was created by higher quality materials.
  3. Furniture restoration allows you to give your room a new personality without spending the money. Restoring a piece of furniture and incorporating the piece in with the rest of your interior design scheme can help give your living area a while new look.

At Apple Furniture Service, we specialize in furniture restoration. Common Furniture Restoration Questions

November 11th, 2014

Furniture-Restoration-Questions

While many have been faced with the option of furniture restoration for their piece of furniture, few are sure what furniture restoration really is. A lot of furniture owners have questions about furniture restoration, but are never sure who to turn to for answers. Here are the most commonly asked questions surrounding furniture restoration:

  • Can wood furniture be restored completely? While not all pieces of furniture can be completely restored to their original state, most pieces of furniture created prior to the 1960s can be successfully restored fully. It is important to keep in mind that certain characteristics must be taken into consideration before the restoration process can begin.
  • Can chair be re-caned to match their previous color? This is possible. Raw cane can be found in a number of different colors to find the best match for your chair.
  • Does a loose chair mean it’s completely broken?- A chair that is loose does not mean it is completely broken. Furniture restoration can help to repair and strengthen the legs of the chair to make it as sturdy as before.
  • What prevents furniture from being restored? While many pieces can be restored, some elements prevent full restoration to occur. If the piece was built past the 1960s, it is more than likely made of particleboard and plywood. These types of materials cannot be restored because they are of a lower quality. If the wood has been treated with multiple layers of stains and paint, it could become difficult to strip the wood to its original form.

If you have any other further questions surrounding furniture restoration, turn to the professionals of Apple Furniture Services. Never attempt to restore your pieces of furniture without the proper knowledge and skill, this could cause serious damage to your furniture.

Furniture Restoration: The Three Benefits

November 3rd, 2014

Furniture-Restoration

Furniture restoration is an involved yet beneficial process. While some may believe that furniture restoration can be achieved on their own, it is always more beneficial to have the process completed by a professional. Having furniture restoration completed by a trained and skilled craftsman is the best way to ensure you will experience the three main benefits that come from the process. Instead of taking the time to find new furniture, consider using furniture restoration instead.

The top three benefits of furniture restoration are the following:

  1. Environmentally Friendly- It requires less carbon and energy to complete the furniture restoration process than creating a new piece of furniture. Furniture restoration allows a sturdy piece of furniture to be given new life, while creating a new piece of furniture requires more work, materials, and results in a piece that is not nearly as sturdy.
  2. Reuse- While it may appear that a piece of wooden furniture has reached the last of its life based on the surface, the base and structure of the piece remains sounds. Furniture restoration helps to increase the overall life of the piece of furniture based on its appearance while the heart of the piece remains solid.
  3. Style- While many homeowners are paying top dollar for newer furniture that appears to be older, those with older furniture can create a brand new look with furniture restoration. The process will cost half of the price as newer furniture while creating a new look for your room. One piece of restored furniture will be all you need to recreate a new style for your living space.
